text-align: left;">I have been inspired to do this from a favorite blog that I have been following for a couple years, Creative Kismet. Regina is an accomplished artist (painter), crafter, stitcher, cook, mom of two fabulous little boys and more! I love following her muses; it's my Sunday morning thing: sit with hot coffee and play 'catch-up' on something wayyy better than reality TV without the drama.

Another first for me: I don't think I've ever made a brooch, except for on a costume. So, I made two. The Big Brooch is just that. Kinda big. It measures 3" across and 5" tall including the beaded tail. The "Heinz 57" one is 2-1/2" across and 2"tall.

I'll probably be making more brooches, as I found it very satisfying in place of therapy for the creatively insane. It is also a great way for me to use little scraps of necktie silk that I use in my handbags, and I'm so happy to find a home for some of the many beads that feed my addiction. So if you like the brooches, and would like to comment, post now for a chance to win.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Renegade Arts & Crafts Fair in Los Angeles last week (Dec. 11 and 12, 2010) was very cool and fun.

Just a few weeks after closing my brick 'n mortar 'Sew Joe Stitch Lounge', I was in full production in my own studio (okay, its aka my dining room), but it sounds good to say studio. I am there temporarily and loving the time I have to design and create, even while tending to household tasks as they arise.

I love the process of picking out fabric, of which I do have a big selection, and making it into something that will be bought and enjoyed by someone else. I hadn't realized just how nice it is to have someone want to buy something I designed and made, guess I'm shy that way. But I myself love to buy things that are made by other artists, even if it's something I can make myself. It's quite satisfying to wear and/or behold something I bought at a fair or on Etsy. It's nice when someone compliments my choices, and it feels good to say where I got it.

I sold quite a few of these little coin cuties, and lots of earrings too. A really great gal bought my Calavera Satchel and said her two friends want one too, (still checking my email, heehee). But the one that felt really good was a really cool couple who were quietly discussing the handmade elephant pillow. I could tell they really liked it. They asked a couple questions, quietly had more discussion and set it down. They returned to my booth two more times that day. I am not one to push a sale, it was more fun watching them in their quiet discussions, fondly examining it while considering the purchase. Their last visit to my booth late in the day netted no sale. Oh well, I was happy to see them appreciate my work. I know how hard it is to make the right decision--regret can go both ways: glad or sorry about the purchase. I have several pairs of shoes in my closet that would have been just fine staying on the shelf for someone else.

Well, I'm happy to report that "sleep on it" was the appropriate adage here. First thing Sunday, this lovely couple returned and with a bit of apprehension mixed with that confident "we're gonna get the elephant" made this important purchase. I can't wait to make more elephants, purses, jewelry and am excited to design new stuff. Stuff is good.

So with a couple good arts & craft shows under my belt, I'm looking forward to marketing in several areas and venues to launch my 'stuff'.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! Remember, no resolutions, just do the right thing every day :~)
-Jeanie

Renegade Craft Fair December 11 & 12

Two things:
1. If you haven't been to the (semi-annual) Renegade Craft Fair, you should head out to this one! There will be over 160 vendors offering need it, want it, gotta-have-it quality handmade stuff.

2. It's a fun place to take friends, & family (even little ones) for shopping, munching and sippin', get some invigorating inspiration, dance in the sunlight to great music, or just walk around and find perfect holiday gifts for you or someone you love.

Go to Renegade.com to take-in a bit of their history and visit some of the cities where you can look at the artists, crafters, designers and makers of stuff. These are just samples of what you'll find here in Los Angeles December 11 & 12, 2010. It's the perfect way to cover everyone on your shopping list (including YOU, tee heehee). Many vendors have websites or Etsy Shops where you can buy later--what better way to keep the 'buy handmade' movement going all year long.

So, grab a water bottle, a light jacket, gather your people, and take the Metro to the Chinatown stop. You can't miss the Cornfield, it's that big grassy field you see from the train and probably have wondered what the heck it is/was. Well, it's a fabulous venue for outdoor shopping in this beautiful weather and is close to many Chinatown restaurants and shops.

If you drive, go to 1245 North Spring Street (Los Angeles State Historical Park) where you will find plenty of free parking, yaayy!

Last (not least), SewJoe Studio (that's me) will be there with my handmade treasures--check out my booth near the food/music area. I've made dozens of purses, bags and clutches, my lovable elephant pillows, wrist cuffs and lots of earrings. There's a few silk vests and jackets too.

Hope to see you
',~)
Jeanie

Empty room, painted wall.

Now that the store is empty, I can take a good look at the wall I painted three years ago in a moment of creative use of oops paint! I was thinking pink anyway, and when Charm Colors had this gallon of semi-gloss pink--well who can resist $6 bucks. The added colors are from the 7-color paint job I did in my bedroom a few years ago. Painting is great therapy and definitely quiet time to get some creative thinking done!

So now I've closed my shop after three years of fun and will hopefully in early January, be painting the new walls in my studio. I have no idea what I will create on those walls yet, but it'll kick-in when I can actually stand in front of the blankness and imagine the possibilities.

Owning a business in this great town of South Pasadena was one of the best times of my life and will always be cherished memories. What came out of it will live on forever--new friends that were customers, great relationships with other businesses here, and it was such a joy (and still is) to belong to one of the BEST Chambers of Commerce ever!

I am constantly running into former customers and students here in town and they tell me they miss my store. I feel so very proud when I see a student and she shows me or tells me what sewing she is doing. It was great to be the one who gave them instruction and confidence to tackle the sewing machine. Just like riding a bike, the fun comes flooding in like it was always there.

Next post, I'll show you photos of how I packed up all my sewing treasures into my dining room and set up a temporary work studio. Being creative is a bit interrupted by the fact that there is no good place in my entire home to leave out the ironing board 24/7. And I have to clean up the table for dinner. But it is really nice to be home with my two teenagers and my dear hubby.

Back to work now.

Caio

Jeanie

Abbey Road, San Francisco style

Emily saw this row of concrete steps leading across a fountain downtown and immediately assembled her brother and friends to take a walk for the photo.

San Francisco just doesn't ever get boring. There's always something that's on the list of 'must do', 'must see', 'must eat' list, oh and of course 'must shop'! Our friend pointed out a perfect pair of shoes, which I quickly snapped up (thanks, Cliff, you know my style!). We love to shop for misc. clothing and household stuff. We don't really buy souvenirs, (except the cable car Christmas ornament I got 25 years ago). Souvenirs just need dusting, but who needs 'em because I have an amazing collection of photos. I love the fact that I don't even have to take notes or write down dates on my photos, it all comes up in iPhoto--we even know on which camera it was taken.

Our visit was just a few months ago, but we are all in agreement that we need to get back up there soon. I would love to hear some new restaurant suggestions, the kids will want to do the same ones as last time. I don't think we should play it safe.

New stuff I made

Here's two extremes: one is a little coin cutie that sparkles in metallic vinyl. The bottom of the bag is turquoise suede, as are the handles. Roomy inside, and I love the 10" clickey frame closure.

Just sharing, hope you like them.

Byeee,

Jeanie

Summer time, sewing time.

School is out soon, and what better way to embrace summer than to get into a class where creativity and instruction keep you in the know and into the fun all summer long. Summer stuff is fun and quick to make--I'm thinkin' sarongs, tote bags, sun hats, decorating flip-flops, all kinds of fast & easy projects.

These gals are hugging the pillows they made in their second day of sewing class. With only six students per class each week, friendships are born along with getting in touch with your own inner fashionista, designer, stitcher, crafter, pants-hemmer (pick one or all). Many yards of fabric, trim and embellishments were transformed into personal handmade treasures.

Sewing is a life-skill and can be as involved as you want it to be. If you're not set on sewing an entire wardrobe, making a tailored suit or being in the constant change of fashion arena, think of sewing as a helpful tool needed occasionally. It doesn't take long to learn how to shorten a skirt or pair of pants. Even small repairs or changing the look of a jacket with a few add-ons is quite the feeling of accomplishment.

If you're ready to give it a try, or it's time to take another step if you're already sewing, this skill is rewarding and great therapy. Personally, I'm making new handbag patterns now, one is a satchel and I can't wait to see it done.

Caio for now,

Jeanie

Getting ready for May 1st 2010

I am busy sewing, making a big mess and in total bliss getting some purses and other fun stuff made for the South Pasadena Eclectic Music Festival and Art Walk.

What a great night to walk Mission Street from Fair Oaks to Grand. Art galleries, shopping, music, food & wine will remind the hundreds of local residents and visitors why South Pasadena is such a unique small town. In addition, the newly formed South Pasadena Arts Council (SPARC) will be cloistered on Meridian with many artists showing their work and a very impressive interactive art project is inviting all visitors to participate in the creative process. Now's your chance to pick up that paint brush and add your mark to SPARC's inaugural event.

As for Sew Joe Stitch Lounge, I have made many wonderful and fun handbags, plus other accessories just in time for Mother's Day. I have now made at least 30 of them and still cutting and planning new ones. I will be having a class on making these little gems as soon as I get a few more frames in stock.

Which brings me to the hardest part of making these clutches--getting ahold of the frames! They are tricky to find, and once you find them, you have to make a pattern, which is believe me, extremely EASY! The pattern has to be made after you get the frame, cuz these frames are available in many different sizes, and you'll want to find the right one for you. I have a few of these frames for sale in my brick 'n mortar store, and am ordering more from overseas now.

There is a great selection of purse frames for sale on Etsy--I like this shop, and this one. Of course you can check out my own Etsy shop (SewJoe.Etsy.com) and see some more of the finished ones I have made.

The little coin clutches are only three inches across the frame, and perfect for small scraps--and yes, they are easy to make. Okay, I'll fess up, these little ones were tough for me at first (do I have big hands?) and after I made one, I swore I'd never do another. But when it's done, you glue on the frame and the thing is so damn cute, and fast to make, you will find yourself scrounging around your fabric stash to make another one.

For a free PDF copy of how to make the pattern, go to Sew Joe and click on email and send me a request. These instructions are very clear and it's quick to make this pattern. Use poster board to trace your final pattern, then you can trace it onto your fabric.

Have fun, sew something soon!

Rainy week, sew sew week!

I've always felt that rainy days are perfect for sewing. I've been learning to make these purses with the metal 'kisslock' frames, and have already made 7 of them--all different of course. I am looking for the perfect textile to do these in, but I know I'll continue to just make them as I find interesting fabrics lying around. It's a great way to use up small scraps.

The others I made are: washed out denim with cute embroidery, woven raffia, wonderful turquoise tooled-vinyl, and a few out of fabulous silk jacquard. I'm working on my love for Alice in Wonderland with a vintage polyester double-knit that has big roses on it; that got the Red Queen embroidered and beaded. Also, have some recycled beat-up brown leather, this one will also get embroidered.

My favorite so far is this medium size purse in blue and gold cotton-chenille upholstery on an antiqued bronze frame with ball-chain strap. So now I'm off to finish my Queen, then later of course, Alice.

Byeee

Jeanie

Off to Alabama

This is a happy elephant who was packed up and off to Alabama last week after Thursday's football game. A couple fans from Alabama stopped in and bought this pink fabulous pillow for his mom, who loves to sew, and will surely enjoy this handmade souvenir. They stayed at our own majestic Arroyo Vista Inn here in South Pasadena. I love when visitors take-in our great little town when traveling here to big L.A.

It's fun making these elephants, especially choosing the silk jacquard I make them with, and doing the hand-beading on the blankies is therapy! If you are wondering why she is called 'Kevin'--daughter Emily and her friend Laura aptly dubbed her because of her amazing resemblance to the bird in the Disney-Pixar movie "Up". And believe me, our Kevin has quite a personality!

Kevin is deciding on whether she likes the new evening clutches for holiday parties, or maybe she'll grab some of those adorable and huggable stuffies that Yohana made. She likes the earrings and stretchy bracelets that Emily made, thinking they are pretty tempting to really take a good 'peck' at! Jeanie's elephant pillows are exquisite in that gorgeous Italian necktie silk, they look like artwork on the couch, and want a hug once in a while too. Hanging on our little Christmas tree, just out of Kevin's reach are cute little zippered coin purses for only $5 and are perfect for gift cards from any store or coffee spot.

I thought it would be great to give Kevin a little scarf with "Shop SouthPas" embroidered on it, but she's pretty fussy about what she wears. So you take it from here: Shop local, shop South Pasadena! The treasures you will find in our local stores and boutiques are far more memorable than the mass produced stuff at the malls and the big stores. I tried it on, and it looks good enough to wear anytime, but inclement weather is best for this textile--although I'm not sure how it would sound wearing this hat while rain is pelting down on it, might get kinda noisy under the brim.

Anyway, Gracie (head only) wears the hat in my store when the weather's nice, while Bernice the dress form (no head at all) stands out front in the sunshine. It seems that having a dress form outside attracts attention from passers by, and customers who see her know I'm open. I made a matching raincoat too, so Bernice can wear it out there in the rain and I won't worry that she'll fall apart like a dripping blob of wet paper mache.

I love this fabric, it's called 'Lollidot' by Michael Miller. I have made a few little coin purses and tote bags out of it too. I have lots of this laminated cotton in the store, even sock monkey prints. Oilcloth and vinyl round out my favorite stuff to play with right now. You saw the vinyl barstools I posted photos of recently--I've got 10 yards of that fabulous turquoise one just waiting to be some great hobo style purses and a few small clutches. I also have some nifty metallic vinyls in wild colors waiting for me to spend a little time stitchin up some new ideas.

That's enough to keep me busy, and I'm still sewing lots of silk purses these days too.

Ciao for now

--Jeanie

Celebrating two years

Here's the flyer announcing the upcoming boutique and celebration I'm having on December 5th. Two years in this tough economy is a good reason to celebrate and I look forward to taking my business to the next level now that the seed has begun to grow!

Hope to see you then, and I promise really great handmade treasures from six local designers and I, too am making up a bunch of fun stuff including some new ideas that just kicked me in the head, now being stitched up into fabulous accessories for you and you home!

So--what's new at Sew Joe? I have hundreds of new and irresistible buttons in, I got more beads that are very cool and versatile, and 'Smooshies' for your kids. Don't worry, you're not out of the loop, Smooshies are kinda new. They are soft and cuddly bodies of creatures, and their parts (eyes, lips, wings, arms & legs) are separately placed wherever your little one wants to put them--they stick on with soft velcro. It's sort of like a cushy cuddly 'Mr. Potato Head' with lots of personality. For $12.99, your little toddler will keep busy at home or on that holiday car trip.

If you missed my home page, check it out. I have many projects ready to be made by you and take them home wrapped in pretty paper. Don't mess up your space, stop in the studio and make a bunch of holiday gifts right here with lotsa love and little moola.

Flea Market Fun

6" platforms--very tempting!

This recent fabulous Sunday in southern California took family, friends and me to the Rose Bowl flea market. People-watching was at it's finest! And I managed to actually entertain my two otherwise non-plussed teenagers by getting into a shouting match with some paranoid vendor who thought DH was taking a photo of "her artwork", when it was I who was the subject of his shutter, not her booth in the background. Wake-up lady, you're not the first person to melt glass--I can google this craft if I was even interested in making more stuff for my dust rag to collect. (unplanned rant over.)

It was quite entertaining watching our friend's 13-yr. old son perusing the massive number of vendors who had motorcycle jackets to offer. Priced from $20 to $200, hubby and I were both impressed at Zane's diligence, persistence and finally finding the one perfect black leather jacket in that massive collection of sellers that fit his body and wallet. $25 bucks and he was smiling with the look of satisfaction that we adults recognized as 'mission accomplished'.

Wonderful junque, collectibles and clothing were in every nook and cranny of that Pasadena parking lot. It's interesting that the word 'vintage' is as common among sellers as the word 'organic' is the buzz word in the supermarkets. Does anyone feel like I do on this, like, show me some proof. How do I know that linen you cut up and stitched into a new pillow is vintage? Oh well, guess I'm ready for a new gotta have it fad to surface.

Anyway, there where hundreds of hopeful sellers who work way too hard for that elusive buck. Some of those booths, triple-wide mind you, looked like a full-on boutique that took many hours just to set up. Wow! I decided to get back to my store on Monday and kick some you know what. I was inspired. And I, too, felt a small sense of accomplishment when I found a few small vessels that I will be turning into fabulous little pin cushions--I'll show you those later, so . . .

Ciao for now,

Jeanie

Hi to all:

--Check out this 'before' and 'after' picture of my new addiction: barstools! A good friend gave me these vintage 60's gems and I had them recovered in this great turquoise vinyl that looks like tooled leather. What fun they are and those oldies really are goodies, as in comfort and built strong. I have them here in my store so they're great for just sitting making patterns or doing some hand sewing. They're best when a friend drops in and we can just have a quick chat. I'm looking for three more cool stools for my kitchen that I can reupholster. Stop in and take a look--I'm also making some great handbags out of this textile! I also have some metallic vinyl in bright colors, this is fun stuff!

It's been quite a while since I've blogged, my days and hours have just slipped away, filling me with distractions and gotta get this and that done now. Whew!

So during these past few months that I have not blogged, I can recap. I have easily sewn up at least 50 handbags and totes, and designed a couple new handbags. Made a raincoat and hat for my dress form, Bernice,--she's getting a new Christmas outfit too, including lights! I have reconnected with my good friend of 20 years ago via FaceBook, ordered so much new stuff for the store that I am again re-structuring it. I have happily gotten my two teenagers back on track with their homework and chores. I have purchased probably a dozen new pairs of shoes (it's an admitted addiction) and now am getting ready for the holiday season.

Next post, I'll show you some of the great new stuff I got here in the store, including irresistible buttons and lovable huggable critters for kids.

Ciao exciting show for sewing that I've seen yet. It's not dry and boring like so many of the older 'how-to-sew' stuff--this is fresh and fun and geared toward beginners and intermediates alike, while giving us old folks some new funky/fun ideas!

You can get a schedule on their website to find where/when you can see it on your TV, there's even a couple episodes you can watch right on your computer, or you can order a couple DVDs and start your library.

And here's the 'amusement park' reference: I had the pleasure of meeting with Jane and her producer Susan here in Sew Joe and are they crazy fun!! They have lots of exciting sewing projects up their (dare I pun) 'sleeve' so keep an eye out for more updates. You're gonna want to collect of all their stuff. Enter the summer sewing video contest at Jane's Sew and remember when I little, my aunt had this cool small trash receptacle next to her sewing machine that was one of those 3-gallon ice cream containers (the ones you can get at Fosselman's). Her container was completely wrapped with these magazine reeds, threaded together with plastic clothesline. It was awesome, and now I think I can actually make one. (Making one never crossed my mind when I was that young.) But hey, I'm sittin here thinkin' "what else can I make out of these reeds?"

It would be a great Boy or Girl Scout project to take on as a recycle effort covering pencil cups, small trash cans, flower vase, you could do an entire desk set with 'mag-reeds'. Anyway, this looks fun, I'm all over it. type='text'>I miss my Apple

What an empty feeling, being without my computer. It feels just like when you have to leave your car for repair and even though you get a ride home and have all these great people in your life to take you anywhere (sort of), it's just not the same. It's the perceived feeling of freedom that has been robbed from us over some worn out brake shoes or radiator problems. Adjusting is easy, and not even that big of a pain in the #*%, but what a difference. Are we spoiled? I like 'monetarily well-adjusted' better, cuz riding the bus sucks.

I actually blew an engine once, and had to take the bus everywhere for two weeks. The only good thing about it was I lost a bunch of weight walking (sometimes running) to and from the bus everyday. What a revelation: so now I know exercise works, but I don't ever wanna be without my wheels for that long again. That was a long time ago and the only one I knew with wheels was that pudgy bus driver in a uniform and a big smile.

So when the Apple guy said 3 to 5 days without my computer, it felt like a judge without any clue how important this thing is to me banged his gavel and said "too bad". I won't be loosing any weight with this loss of technology, and I can't think of anything good that is gonna come from 'computer-fasting'. Not fair, it's raining outside too--a perfect day to sit and get some serious computer work done. Ok, I borrowed one to do this blog, but I don't have my stuff. I need my own computer stuff.

At least tomorrow I can get in my store and carry out all the sewing I have planned. I'm making some Valentine and other fun little gifts, like sachets using fabulous silk scraps, trims and buttons like a little collage, then stuff them with lavender, chamomile and rose buds. Wow, I'm feeling much better just thinking about it, I can't wait to get started. I'm really in a sewing mood these days, and have so many new things that I'm making for the store. Some of my new stuff sold pretty quickly--that was fun! So now I'm thinking: I hope to get lots done before Apple calls me to pick up my computer.

Ciao for now,

Jeanie

Ringing in the new year felt complete when my friends and I walked what felt like a couple miles up and down Orange Grove Avenue in Pasadena viewing the floats. On Dec. 31st, about 10:30 p.m.; this is a great activity for those who love to see the amazing floral displays up close and fabulous, taking time to inhale the fragrance and satisfy the eye. Seeing the flowers, seeds, twigs etc. as an art medium at such a magnitude is more fun for me that getting up in the wee hours and cramming myself and my kids into a small spot on a cold hard street curb to sit and watch them drive by. I am happy to forego the bands, twirlers and horses for now, I've done that many times. We made it home in time to pop a cork and ring-in at midnight.

It's also kind of interesting watching the overnighters set up their campsites, asking where they're from, glad that I decided years ago that I'll never be one to sleep on the side of the street waiting for a parade the next morning. My kids informed me they wanna do that sometime.

Here we are today, back to the daily grind. I love the photo (above) that my daughter and hubby took a couple months ago in New York. It was a great holiday season, visiting with friends and relatives, but what really feels good now is getting back to a normal household.

This year, my big resolution is only one word: focus! I already know what it is I resolve, I have gone through many resolutions over the years, only to have my resolve slip my mind as I got caught up getting back into the daily routine. So now, taking all those past resolutions, i.e. get organized, clean out the garage, exercise regularly, sew something new everyday, etc., I've decided that these are goals. Thus the resolve: FOCUS.

I got this great calendar/journal at Gracie's Market that fits in my purse. My goals go on the calendar as appointments. Big projects get put on the calendar, then I back into them placing small steps on days that I will focus on getting a part of my goal accomplished. Baby steps add up, don't they? If I don't get something done on the day I had it calendared, I will re-focus and put it down for the next available day I can do it.

At the end of the day or week, it's so very satisfying to check off the things that got done! Focus. Stay on track (most of the time). Feel the accomplishment high. (That's me reminding myself.)

Happy New Year!

Jeanie

Luv my Ove Glove

Does this photo make sense? What I am trying to do is press open the seams of this little zippered bag I made and I can never accomplish this because I don't think they make an ironing board for Barbie. She wouldn't iron anyway.

So "hat's off" to the Ove Glove! Or should I say, let's give a big hand to . . . . Yeah! This is the one you've seen on TV, and the moment I saw this commercial, I knew I wanted one. There's no way it'll ever be in my kitchen, my oven is not working anyway. My first thought was, finally, something I can protect my hand with when I need to press something small in my sewing projects. I have burned my fingers long enough, now I just pull on this glove and I can press difficult to reach seams and interfacing right over my 'Ove Glove' hand. I love it. I have used a sleeve board, a tailor's ham or just rolled up some fabric and put it inside a small area that I need to press, but now I can actually put my hand inside for support while I manipulate the seams open and press from the outside (or inside before I turn it). When I make a handbag or something square, I need to get the bottom seam pressed open for a nice finish. The problem is that I have backed my fabric with canvas to make it stiff and I can no longer get it to lay flat on a sleeve board.

This leads me to a really great tip for all of you, I love fabric handbags but I don't always like them to be floppy and soft. So I learned how to make them stand up on their own and have nice structure. Here's the tip: Use Heat 'n Bond Lite, (lite as opposed to regular Heat 'n Bond). Cut out your pattern in your fabric of choice, fuse the Heat 'n Bond to the fabric, peel-off the paper and fuse heavy canvas or pant-weight denim to it, pressing with a hot iron. Now cut out the canvas along your fabric pattern lines. This makes one sturdy piece of fabric, so give up using interfacing to stiffen--no more bubbles, and no more slouchy bags! It is still easy to work with, so stitch as usual, it'll be lots thicker but definitely sewable. And now when you're trying to figure out how to press open the bottom seams, you'll love the Ove Glove too.

I had tried many different ways to stiffen up a bag, I finally learned this tip from an actual handbag manufacturer. There is no interfacing out there that will do a better job, I've tried them all, I've been disappointed many times. The reason you must use Heat 'n Bond Lite, not regular Heat 'n Bond, is because the latter is for sure gonna muck up your needle and cause all kinds of thread breaking and frustration. Heat 'n Bond Lite is made to be used on the sewing machine. I sell this at the store, and Monica knows how well this works, she is launching her line of unique handbags now, and I hope she'll want to send me a photo to share!

Ciao for now,

--Jeanie

Holiday Boutique

Well, I didn't blog last Sunday, and it wasn't for lack of time, I didn't have a photo ready because I left the camera at my store. Lots of holiday fun gatherings happening here in town, I am really enjoying shopping local and buying as much as I can that is handmade. I am getting ready for next week's boutique here at Sew Joe, stitchin some handbags and cleaning out cabinets full of fabric, lots of good textiles at great prices.

Fun stuff first! Take a look at this great new tote I made. I am loving this one for two reasons: I am currently in love with vinyl! and second, this one is specially made for Alana who just turned 17. Her mom gave her a Sew Joe gift certificate and Alana came bouncing in happily a few days later bursting with ideas and a definite "I'm gonna have fun" look in her smile. It didn't take her long to pounce on this fab metallic silver/gray vinyl fabric. Taking the lead from one of my other handbags, she dug out some great buttons and trim to accent the pocket and a fun barkcloth with a boomerang print for the lining. She layered a photo of an audience of 3-D movie-goers using heat transfer paper over a recycled swatch of Audrey Hepburn (I think it was formerly a t-shirt). We designed the pocket from there, and I had a blast stitchin up the whole thing! Hey, I'm not bragging, I wasn't in this alone. ;-) Happy birthday Alana!

I decided to make two more of these metallic vinyl bags, not the same of course. One is getting donated today for a fundraiser event to help Louisiana Children's Hospital, and the other one may get a photo of my mother in 1942. I'll probably add some beads, buttons, some pewter charms and a collage of linen prints. You can see these two finished projects next Saturday Dec. 13th at my boutique/anniversary sale. Lots of great handmade art, jewelry, table linens, women's shawls and scarves and more surprises will be there!! You come too.

--Jeanie

<img style="float:right; bloggers:

I didn't post last Sunday because I got busy working on my website and the day just flew by. I did want to show the great small bag I made last week, I created the pattern a couple years ago and I'm finally getting it into production. Hope you like the photo. I have some here in the store for sale. Call or email for measurements and pricing.

I am excited about this Friday--yes Black Friday, but I am not hitting the malls. I am heading downtown Los Angeles (maybe I should take the train) to pick up a --get this--an industrial/portable overlock that also has a coverstitch (hem those T's) and a merrow stitch (finish those napkins, tablecloths and ruffles). I hope it's as good as it sounds and easy for customers to use on studio time. At least it's fun getting a new toy here in the store.

So now here we are at Thanksgiving and in my pledge to buy handmade this season, I'm heading to Zinnia to buy a hostess gift for my brave and wonderful cousins who make dinner every Thanksgiving. I get off easy making apple pie, so I'm getting them this fabulous and beautifully fragrant handmade candle. Wait, there's more, these candles are made by a local middle school 13-yr. old boy who I never would've guessed made these because they are impeccably done and I'm so proud of him I just want to get one for everyone.

So Happy Thanksgiving to all--and if you need emergency napkins for the big T-day, just come in and we can stitch something up in the fabric of your choice! Hey that could be your hostess gift!!

Reflecting

To kick-off my blog, I want to share with you what has inspired me. I am coming up on my one-year anniversary for Sew Joe Stitch Lounge. There have been at least three or four things that inspired me to open this store, kind-of in order of importance.

www.zinnia.biz is owned by a fabulous and talented gal whom I have had the pleasure of knowing for more years then we both like to recount, cuz they just flew by. She opened Zinnia four years ago, which offers the best arts/crafts/and whatever else you didn’t realize you really need. She just added “The Funky Junque Gallery” to this gotta go there store. I would often stop in and see her and/or Joe for a visit and inspiration. Every time I walk in there, it’s an OMG moment, and I just hate when it’s time to leave, I feel like I’m missing out on the fun--and fun they have there.

So now, this seed is starting to germinate that I honestly didn’t even know was planted. But ideas started snowballing--while my dining room, daughter Emily’s room and various cupboards and closets were so packed that I could no longer sew efficiently. It took me too long to find where the heck it was that I put my beige silk or my rayon gabardine. Basically there was no more space for my addiction in my home, and I needed to have a roomy area to work on designing and making handbags and other apparel and accessories.

Now that I have formulated what I needed to do, I realized that I could just move into a studio and start making patterns and samples to produce a line of (not sure at the time, but mostly it was handbags). Then I had a revelation. How was I going to pay the rent? I had a few sales and customers in the wings, but I thought maybe I could get a bigger place and offer sewing classes to help pay expenses! That all sounded good, not too big an endeavor. At least not until my friend Christy said “Jeanie, ya can’t send ‘em to JoAnns for fabric and thread, they’re gonna be in your place to learn, might as well sell stuff too!” So instead of looking for a small room as a studio, I went into a ‘full-on store’ with a real address, and oh what fun this building is with its quaint English style and fab courtyard.

And the fourth inspiration is --really, I’m serious: Project Runway (season four) turned me down. I had a great day going downtown to The Standard Hotel, squeaking through two interviews, only to hear Tim say: “it’s not what we’re looking for.” My husband says it was because I didn’t have any tattoos. I was really planning on that hundred grand, but hey, I can still do this. So I was lucky enough to get the Brother Authorized dealer nod, and at least I feel connected, because I sell Brother Project Runway sewing machines, they are very popular and a real workhorse of a machine.

The photo is of my identical triplet cousins--they wouldn’t hold still for the camera, but they look great in their little dresses I made for their first birthday.

<p style="margin-top: 0px;
